1951. De 31-jarige Henriette Lacks bezoekt het John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, het enige ziekenhuis waar zij als zwarte vrouw terecht kan. De blanke gynaecoloog Howard Jones onderzocht Lacks, uiteraard in de zaal die bestemd is voor 'kleurlingen'. Op haar baarmoederhals treft hij een gezwel aan dat al bij de lichtste aanraking gaat bloeden. Jones snijdt er een stukje van af voor onderzoek en stuurt Henriette naar huis. Wat Jones er niet bij vertelt, is dat een monster van Lacks' kankercellen ook naar het celkweeklaboratorium van het ziekenhuis worden gestuurd. Het pathologisch onderzoek wijst kwaadaardige baarmoederhalskanker uit. Nog lang na haar dood zijn de medische onderzoekers met behulp van Lacks' cellen op zoek naar het heilige graal: onsterfelijke menselijke cellen.
